I recently had the opportunity to have an in depth chat with one of my longest and most trusted sources about the final few episodes of Lost.
It's been a wonderful opportunity to have a contact like this to chat and confirm a variety of spoilers over the years and to provide our readers with little snippets/games/teasers for upcoming episodes.
I've summarised the answers and questions below which obviously go behind the now infamous "Are You Sure" buttons.

Interview with Jack Bender

We're assuming the Lost finale was not shot chronologically. Can you tell us what to look for on Sunday so we can know when we're watching what the actual last scene shot was?
I can tell you there was some discussion about what would be the last shot, and I decided that I wanted the last shot to involve Terry O'Quinn and Matthew Fox. And it was not an entirely popular choice on the production end because it meant keeping the actors a little longer and not getting them off of the clock. Blah blah bah. I insisted the last shot of our series was not going to be something arbitrary. In fact, we did three takes of it. And it involved a crane. It was a shot in the picture and it involved a crane with the two of them. We rehearsed it and we did take one and I said, "Well, that was wonderful guys, but I'm not ready to let go yet." So we did it again and I said, "That was also wonderful, but I can't say it yet." And then, on the third take, I said, "Well, I guess I have to say it now — that's a wrap." And that was our last shot, at 5:30 in the morning as the sun was coming up.

Michael Emerson Interview

ABC is being quite coy about tonight's Desmond-themed episode, "Happily Ever After." Are we in for something special tonight?
Like many other episodes this season, it's ... it's just a good reveal. The door creaks open a little bit further. Something in the mechanics of the narrative is going to make itself ... we're going to think about things differently — certainly about Desmond.
It's tough to answer those types of questions, isn't it?
One of the things I'm not going to miss is trying to decide what I can say and what I can't say about the show. It's going to be so great when the finale airs and then I can just talk freely about everything we did and what it all meant. But, honesty, I think the upcoming episode is a strong one and, like every other episode this season, it points us toward the end.

In a clip for tonight's Richard Alpert–themed episode, "Ab Aeterno," we finally learn the favor that Jacob asks of Ilana in the hospital: to protect the candidates. Of all the candidates, why Sayid? He seems the most tricky.
Yeah, I don't really know. All I can say is there's a group of people my character's protecting ... and we're still waiting to find out what that is.
At some point will we find out why she was in a Russian hospital?
Yeah, it is explained, actually, why I was in the hospital. The audience will definitely get an answer for that.
In the second clip, Ilana, Jack, Hurley, Frank, and Sun are sitting around a campfire talking about being candidates. Jack asks you what they are supposed to do now. Ilana responds with a not-very-reassuring, "I don't know."
Yeah. [Laughs.] "The shit's about to hit the fan and we're all screwed." She was educated as to what to do up to a point and once she experienced everything and took them along the journey she was supposed to take them on, she's kind of spent and she doesn't know what else to do.
Ilana does seem to know her way around the island.
When I first got the role, I definitely wondered if I'd been there before. But, so far, it seems I've been educated because of my job — as far as protecting the candidates goes — like what lies around the island and where things are, stuff like that.

That's true. We don't even know her last name. Does she have one? Is she like Madonna?
I think she's kind of like Madonna. The scene where I took Sayid to the airport and I flashed a badge, my name on it was ... It wasn't even Ilana, it was something else. I think it was Mary or something. But I don't know what that is, it was obviously a made-up name because I don't go by that in the show. But, yeah, no last name. Oh ... That's not true! That's not true! That's so not true, I just remembered ... There is a last name and that comes in one of the other episodes.
Glad you remembered. Now it will be disappointing if it's Smith or Jones.
No, it's not. It's Radzinsky, or something like that.
Really? Did you just make that up?
No, no. I think that's what it was.

Francois Chau Interview

“Some Like It Hoth” must have been particularly fun for you.
It was great working with Ken and Jorge. Those guys are a blast.
Your character also had a little more of a sense of humor in that episode. He was still kind of an asshole, but he was a little more playful.
Yeah, there was a little glimpse in there, but the rest of the time he was still running around ordering people around, yelling at people and was pretty much the Dr. Chang we’ve come to know and love.
Will we be seeing more of your character this season? Will we find out about the different names and what happened to him after “The Incident”? Will that be paid off or do you even know at this point?
I have no idea. If you’ve been watching this season, they have the parallel universe storyline going on where the plane landed and they never got to the island. I’ve been watching it and one of the fun things is they are putting in either one scene or little cameos with all of these old characters that died or whatever and put them into the parallel season as different – well, I guess the same character, but in a different setting. They’re not the same character they were before and they do different things. I watched last week where the character of Keamy, the bad guy from season four who was on the freighter, showed up as a gangster or something. So I think they are doing that with a whole bunch of characters. And I do make an appearance coming up in I think episode 10 for a little bit. But other than that, I’m not sure.
In episode 10, you show up in the parallel universe?
Yes.
If you are not on the island, it could be really interesting to see how things play out with you and Miles.
I was hoping that they would do something because they had set up this whole thing with Miles being his son and all that stuff that they would do something to kind of close it up, but I’m not sure. They have so many things to put a ribbon on. I’m not sure if they’ll get to everything. But hopefully.
We still have questions about your character, so we hope they find the time to explore your character more.
I have questions too. I would love to know about the different characters, different names and stuff. Maybe they’ll come up with something to satisfy us all.

The hardest thing about being on this show ... You get excited about talking about a certain circumstance, then you realize you weren't supposed to talk about it. Or you're so guarded not to give anything away, you're not completely open. Today I have to do the interview for our final DVD interview and I thought, Why can't I do this after I've read the finale so I can finally know what I'm talking about.
We saw Jin at customs, and then we saw him last week tied up in the back room of a kitchen.
Right, that's not the sequence. You'll see what happens in between in the Jin and Sun episode.
"Kwon" appears written on the cave as a possible candidate to protect the island. Let's assume it is Sun and not Jin, she would be the only woman on the list. Is this a job she even wants?
Well, if Sun does become the candidate, I think she's definitely representing [laughs], being the only woman on the list. And I think it will be a very peaceful island. I think Sun will protect the island but share it at the same time, not keep other people away from the island. I think she'll have a very different take on how she protects it and shares the island.
Are we ever going to see Jin and Sun reunited?
I know, it's been so long. It will happen, but not quite the way I think the viewers would expect.

Spoiler Alert: Did we just uncover the identity of one of the impending casualties Michael Emerson told us about at the Lost premiere?
If we read between the lines of what Michael spilled Thursday night while accompanying his lovely wife, True Blood's Carrie Preston, to the Costume Designer's Guild Awards, one of the Losties we love watching best may be a goner. He also gave us the scoop on freaky-deaky alterna-Ben, the high school teacher...
"You'll see the biggest Ben episode ever in the next two weeks," says Michael, which first left us in a tizzy of excitement (come on, you know Ben episodes are always the best!). But it's what he tells us next that's cause for concern: "It's a big one, and it may be the last one of the Ben episodes...it's worth watching."
Now, you'll have to interpret his statement as you see fit, but as far as we can tell, this leaves us with two options: Ben is not long for both the real and/or sideways worlds, or Michael was simply referring to the decreasing number of Lost episodes remaining before the finale. And while the latter seems much more logical since this cast is full of lip-zipping pros, isn't there a teensy chance we just witnessed a rare occurrence in which one of the most beloved Losties around tricked us with such a straightforward response? Just a thought.
As for the new version of Ben we've yet to get to know, Michael promises that his brief introduction was not smoke and mirrors—this Ben is a great guy!
"There's more of that to come. That's Ben's flash-sideways, and I can't tell you if that's realer than the island existence that we already know of," he explains. "I haven't gotten it figured out yet."
What he has figured out is the way this guy works. "Think of it this way—he has all the same characteristics that Ben has, but they're in different quantities. He has some of the same urges or fantasies, but they're not as powerful with him," Michael tells us. Simply put: "He's more of a regular guy."
Does this regular guy become besties with one wheelchair-bound John Locke (Terry O'Quinn)?
"They have an important relationship," Michael teases with that deliciously devious little grin of his. "Yeah...friends," is all he'll say of their status.
What's your take on Michael's slick reveal—is it just wordplay or is Ben doomed? And how excited are you to see Locke and Ben all buddy-buddy?

Mmmhmmm ... I've made myself a squirrel child out of squirrel bones and some kind of fur and little button eyes. He's real cute.
Obviously you can't just disappear with your father in that cabin for a full season and not have repercussions, so is this what's happened?
Yeah, she's been three years, living on her own, making her own housing and food and protecting herself. The only person she's had contact with as a friend is Locke -- who's not really Locke anymore. So any information that she's been given about what's going on with other people or the Island is from him. And there are maybe some things that are not the whole truth. He's led her to believe that the Others have her baby at the Temple, so that's been her whole plan this last three years, to get him back. Finding out that he's off the Island and Kate is bringing him up is just like a complete, complete shock to her. So there's an interesting relationship with Claire and Kate now -- a combination of animosity, to say the least, and also respect and thanks. So that's been fun playing with.
So since you're the one playing it, do you think there's a way she can snap out of it? Or will Claire just end up on the Island still crazy?
I mean, the evolution this season for her character is sort of coming back to who Claire was. You know, she's still there, underneath it all, even though she's pretty damn loopy. There's still flickers of who Claire is and was, and maybe will be again. Or not.

New Terry O'Quinn Interview
If there’s been one knock on ‘Lost’s new season, it’s that the alternate reality where Flight 815 didn’t crash has left people a bit cold. Are those storylines going to get more compelling?
I have no way to read that kind of thing; I simply do my best when I’m performing it. But I’ve been told by one person who’s seen it that in the episode coming up, [the "sideways" storytelling] really kicks in.
In one clip that ABC released, it looks like John’s box-company boss isn’t very happy with him.
Yeah, Randy is just a little upset. There are repercussions for John’s trip to Australia that send him on a new journey in that “alternate universe” – and that will overlap with other characters from the island.
On the romantic front, things seem to be going well for John and Helen (played by Katey Sagal). In that same clip, there’s mention of a wedding.
Yeah, but I wouldn’t say it’s Helen [who is marrying John]. I wont say it’s not Helen either. Yes, apparently a wedding is being planned – but John might be making that up too!
How soon will we learn why Smokey was “very disappointed” with the people there on the beach?
I’m not exactly sure why Smokey said that – maybe it was just because they were pointing guns at him when he came out? I wonder if there’s going to be a payoff to that line or not.
Is it safe to say that Smokey swiftly silenced Richard because he was afraid he’d reveal too much to the onlookers?
No, it’s not safe to say that. Locke speaks to why he silenced Richard so quickly in one of the next few episodes. He tells Richard why he did that.
I read that around midseason, you have a scene where you unload a lot of island history. Was it hard to grasp all of it as you said it?
It’s delivered so piecemeal, and I’m fed it the same way the audience is fed it, that it’s not hard to grasp. All I have to know is “What are my lines?” and “What is my character’s objective in this scene?”

How soon will we learn why Smokey was “very disappointed” with the people there on the beach?
I’m not exactly sure why Smokey said that – maybe it was just because they were pointing guns at him when he came out? I wonder if there’s going to be a payoff to that line or not.
Is it safe to say that Smokey swiftly silenced Richard because he was afraid he’d reveal too much to the onlookers?
No, it’s not safe to say that. Locke speaks to why he silenced Richard so quickly in one of the next few episodes. He tells Richard why he did that.
I read that around midseason, you have a scene where you unload a lot of island history. Was it hard to grasp all of it as you said it?
It’s delivered so piecemeal, and I’m fed it the same way the audience is fed it, that it’s not hard to grasp. All I have to know is “What are my lines?” and “What is my character’s objective in this scene?”

What’s going on with the "flash-sideways?"
Say goodbye to flashbacks and flash-forwards, and hello to this season’s "different kind of storytelling device" the producers cryptically teased for months. "The flash-sideways enable us to return to Season 1’s character-centric episodes," explains executive producer Damon Lindelof. "They’ll show what [the characters’] lives would have been like if Oceanic 815 had landed and how their lives are different from the lives that we knew before." In one reality, the bomb sent the islanders back to 2007 after Desmond had blown up the Swan hatch. In the coinciding alternate reality, "We'll all criss-cross in very different ways," says Yunjin Kim (Sun). "Certain characters will recognize each other and certain won't."
So should we discard all we learned in the previous seasons' flashbacks?
Pretty much, says executive producer Carlton Cuse. "All that matters now are the flash-sideways stories," he says. "These stories contain differences that you don't need to try to reconcile, but loyal fans will find interesting." For instance, Evangeline Lilly says Kate's flash-sideways reveals that "instead of being a really tormented fugitive on the run, she's now a fugitive-on-the-run who gets a kick out of it." In his Ben-centric March 9 episode, Michael Emerson says, "You'll see a man who is only faintly recognizable as the Ben we've known. What if Ben had been born and lived in unextraordinary circumstances? What might he have been like?" Josh Holloway tells us that Sawyer's March 16 episode will show Sawyer is "the same guy, but on the other side of the law." The March 30 Sun/Jin story will reveal "a totally different relationship" for the couple, explains Kim, where "they are no longer living in Seoul and Sun didn't have to leave Jin at the airport." And Hurley will no longer be cursed by the numbers. "He went from being the unluckiest guy in the world to the luckiest," says Jorge Garcia. “He's rich in good fortune."
