Latest on Dogen via TV Guide Magazine
What are we to make of Lost’s perplexing temple master? He tried to drown and poison Sayid. Then in the February 23 episode, he turns up in Jack’s flash-sideways as a father advising Jack to be a hands-on dad. And exec producer Damon Lindelof says, on March 2, “Dogen’s mysterious origins and history with the island are finally revealed” as he faces off with Sayid. I tracked down actor Hiroyuki Sanada in his native Tokyo to find out more. Turns out the actor has a history with Matthew Fox. They became drinking buddies in Berlin while shooting “Speed Racer,” then continued their friendship (and drinking) in Tokyo when Matthew was promoting Lost. “I never imagined working with him again in Hawaii,” says Hiro, whose swordplay in films like “The Last Samurai” turned Lost producers into fans.
In the March 2 episode, we’ll learn why Dogen left Japan for a new life on the island. Hiro hints his appearance in Jack’s flash-sideways suggests that Dogen’s paternal influence may be realized in the temple. Also significant is the name of Dogen’s hippie translator, Lennon (as in the peace-loving Beatle), as well as Dogen’s name and costume, modeled after a 13th-century monk who introduced Zen meditation to Japan. “I believe Dogen and Sayid will experience some kind of friendship in the end,” Hiro says. “Temples are built for peace and saving people.”
Though he’s now back in Tokyo (which doesn’t bode well for his Lostgevity), last month he took boss Carlton Cuse out to a karaoke bar, where the EP belted out “Proud Mary.” And he’s expected to return Stateside in the spring to promote his role as Anthony Hopkins’ longtime boyfriend in the James Ivory film “The City of Your Final Destination.” Hiro quips: “Being Hannibal Lecter’s lover was a big challenge.”

Interview with Hiroyuki Sanada aka Dogen
Zap2it: Is "Lost" popular in Japan?
Sanada: Very much. I just came back from Tokyo last night. I did a big event with Carlton — talk shows, press conferences. We got a great reaction there. I was surprised at how big it is in Japan. There is a big audience for "Lost."
Zap2it: How many more episodes are you in this season?
Sanada: I can't tell you exactly how many, but I've already finished my shooting.
Zap2it: But you'll be in a few more, correct?
Sanada: A few more, yes.
Zap2it: What is your read on Dogen and his motivation?
Sanada: He grew up in Japan, and somehow he came to the island. He has a mission, which is studying the island. He's very — he has a lot of loyalty to the mission [and is willing] to sacrifice. I think that's the most important thing to him. And he knows something [laughs].
Zap2it: Do you have a sense of where Dogen fits into the hierarchy of the Others? Does he have any more authority than, say, Ben (Michael Emerson) or Richard (Nestor Carbonell)?
Sanada: I don't know if he's equal, or who knows more or is more important. But he's an important person on the island. Yeah, he's mysterious. [Laughs] He was mysterious for me, too. Every week I'd read the script and realize, "Oh — oh my gosh." I really enjoyed reading the script every week.
Zap2it: Do you think Dogen's view of Jack (Matthew Fox) changed after he was willing to swallow a poison pill in "What Kate Does"?
Sanada: Yes. ... I have many scenes with Jack, and also Sayid [Naveen Andrews]. The two of them are the most important people [to Dogen].
Zap2it: They're who you deal with the most?
Sanada: Yes. And they're great actors, so I was very lucky. I had a great time with them.
Zap2it: Do you know how long Dogen has been on the island?
Sanada: He's been living on the island for about 20 years.
Zap2it: And, without giving too much away, what can we look forward to with the character?
Sanada: It will be clear why he came to the island and what his mission is.

Lost Poster 13 Reveal at SPiN NY
Thanks to Nicole for the heads up on this. I'm not sure if this was an officially sanctioned video from ABC or not.
Hi Dark, I was just taking a look at the Barracks Round Up post over on lostargs.com and they have a video which was taken at the reveal. At the end of the video there are a few fast pictures.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw him was: "Is this the new Dogen character?"

Here is another report from my good and "colourful" friend on the island "Le Point d'Exclamation".
Yo dark!Got more scoop stuff for ya.Was able to catch some filming
dude. You already have some pap snaps of the shoot earlier with Hugo
and Fox but here is what I saw a little.Rememeber dont use my bloody
name as those crazed lost peeps will nab me and take me to smokey or
some shit.
ok you will need to watch super careful when this episode is on the
air and will need a tivo or some shit to get a screencap as hugo who
actually seems to have gained weight
has some very detailed notes and shit on his arm from when he met that
Jacob dude in the that "shiney" area as one of your other crazed
sources called it!
I saw Jacob, hurley and this samuari dude lol called dogen or whatever
all together in the temple. You have some photos whatever already of
this set.
Jin gets rescued from the "pirate" looking dudes by would you believe
Claire of all people. She has gone all chuck norris on them and looks
f**king terrible!
She is all serious and unkempt and not the little hottie that we all
remember her for! (dont tell me wife I said that!)
She kinda resembals that crazy french chick in season 1. Jin then
wakes up in one of her makeshift shelter thing-a-me-bobs.
She has also taken one of the pirate dudes hostage or something.
little hard to make it all out as some big fat dude who was watching
it with me would not STFU.
Both jin and the pirate hostage dude are bleeding. Claire definately
knows how to work a weapon now.
Cant wait to find out wtf happened to her to make her so different.
I could not see more because those damn security blobs spotted us and
started to approach us but being so heavy we quickly out paced them.
also got some stuff on sawyer and kate coming up soon will shoot you
an email very soon once i have checked some stuff out but i heard
something about a wedding/engagement ring. its not going to be pretty
in your bloggy comments when those crazies shipper types read it ha
good luck with that
ill try to get some more stuff later in the week as my mate might gets
some intel on the new filming locations and scripts
over and out!

Season 6
It was formally announced that actor Sanada Hiroyuki will appear in the hit US TV drama series ‘LOST Season 6'. Sanada has appeared in a number of Hollywood films such as 'The Last Samurai', but it will be the first time for him to act in a foreign TV drama. After being widely praised by filmmakers and others around the world for his performance in The Last Samurai', Sanada has since moved his base of operations to Los Angeles. Two years have passed, and now as a ‘representative of Japan' he will star in a popular drama series receiving high TV ratings worldwide.‘Season 6' will be the latest and final season of the series. Sanada will become ‘Dogen', who is an important character that plays a vital role in the story. The drama's producer Damon Lindelof talked about his choice for casting Sanada. “For a long time we've held in high regards Hiro's skills. We created ‘Dogen' especially with him in mind.” He also gave reporters a glimpse of the character's personality. “'Dogen' is a dignified yet delicate person. He is a crucial character that adds spice to the story.” Sanada has started participating in the filming from late August.
