LOST Spoilers - The ODI

Here are a few spoilers revealed by Sterling Beaumon who plays Young Ben.

Zap2it: You just mentioned Michael Emerson. Have you two actually talked behind the scenes, trying to develop the character together? What advice has he given you about the role, if anything?

SB: Well, we really haven’t. I mean, before I didn’t know a lot about Ben, and he didn’t give me any pointers. But this last time, since I’m a big fan of the show now, and watch it like an addict, I actually talked theories with him, and he had some pretty interesting ones.

Zap2it: OK, such as? Give me one.

SB: One that we both sorta think is true: Locke and Ben are brothers. Because their mom has the same name, so same mom and different dads…or maybe even the same dad, we don’t know who Locke’s father is!

Zap2it: Now you’ve got me intrigued. Have any other ones you can share with us?

SB: You remember Marvin Candle’s kid in the beginning of Season 5? I believe that’s Miles. And I know one of those [two theories] is true, because I once ran into Damon Lindelof, and asked him if any of these three theories is true. The first one is that Annie is Charlotte. And of course now we know that’s not true because we saw Young Charlotte at the age of three when Annie would be my age. So the only two left are “Ben and Locke are brothers” and “Miles is Marvin Candle’s kid,” and Damon said, “One of those is true.” But he never said that more than one of them isn’t, so I think both of them are.

Sterling Beaumon—the 13-year-old actor who played young Ben Linus in the third-season Lost episode "The Man Behind the Curtain"—will kick off a multi-episode arc on the ABC sci-fi series starting with this Wednesday's episode, "Namaste."

SCI FI Wire recently spoke with Beaumon about his Lost experience and his latest episodes. Following are edited excerpts of the exclusive conversation. Lost airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Go back a step. How did they first hire you?

Beaumon: I actually look hardly anything like Michael Emerson [who plays the adult version of Ben], besides the eyes. I guess I do; a lot of people say I do. But what really got it for me was I could cry. I could cry on cue. And in the first episode I did I had to cry in every scene.

When you did that first episode did they tell you the role might be recurring?

Beaumon: They don't tell anyone anything, but everyone said, "Your character is so big, and your first episode is so big, they have to bring you back." Little did I know that after two years they'd bring me back.

We know that Lost has that crazy veil of secrecy over it, but give us a hint as to what you'll be up to in your episodes.

Beaumon: You're going to find out how Ben became the mean, cruel Ben that he is today. And you're going to find out about the roots of the island and how the island became the island. ... In two of the episodes, I'm really not doing a lot, but you just see me a lot, and you'll see what I mean by that.

Do you get a lot of people coming up to you, asking what's going to happen?

Beaumon: Yeah. It's kind of nice, and it's kind of hard. It's nice because the secrecy gets people to watch, because they want to know what's going to happen. And, in a way, it's hard, because you want to tell people what you do, but now I have to wait months to tell people how fun it was to do this or do that [in an episode], or to show people pictures from the set.

Did you go back and watch any of Michael Emerson's performances as Ben in order to help you play a natural extension of the character?

Beaumon: After I did my first episode [a couple of years ago], we became hooked on Lost, and I watched every single episode. Actually, ["Namaste" director] Jack Bender told me, "You do anything like Michael, and it'll ruin what's coming up." I didn't know what he meant, because I hadn't gotten the next script. And then I [read the next script and thought], "Oh, wow, I see why I can't act like Michael." Because you'll see why Michael starts acting like Ben within these episodes.

What are the chances you'll be back again after these episodes?

Beaumon: Everyone says, "Oh, gosh, you've got to come back again." What I'm hoping is that Annie, supposedly Ben's childhood friend, comes back [in a subsequent episode]. The girl who plays Annie [Madeline Carroll] is actually a close friend of mine.

Q: You told me that before last season's finale, three endings where shot for the final scene. What was your first reaction when you realized it was Locke in the coffin?

I said, "Yes. Of course it has to be that." The writers have an instinct to find the highest possible stakes. You say "It can't be John Locke." So the writers think alright let's make it Locke. Lets find out how that works. They constantly meet you and raise you.

Q: In season five we find you right where we left you, over Locke's body standing next to Jack. Do you think Locke is truly dead?

Well, he's dead there. There are many places in the space/time continuum In one place we are one thing. In others we are something else.

Q: Headed to the new season will we get any new clues as to who Ben is and what he wants?

What is his uber-purpose? I think in a year we are gonna have this same convo. The answer to who and what Ben is part of the answer to the whole thing. It will continue to be reconceptualized. Ben's past, his future. I think this is question that will be answered in the last three episodes.

Q: This season, the show has seemed to ditch the straight flash format and has moved on to something else.

I think everything is flash now. Flash forward flash back flash present flash other present. Other time zone other geographical zone. They've done what they do every year which is crank it one more notch in terms of narrative device. Every year they invent a device to tell the story they want to tell. It's chaotic but stimulating.

Q: I read that Sterling Beaumon who plays Young Ben is back this year? Is that true?

I've seen him on the set. We should get a little more back story.

Q: In the first episode of the new season Ben tells Jack to pack anything he wants because he never coming back. What do you get from that?

That's one of those things Ben says that I think we should take at face value. Based on his knowledge, they pasded through some kind of window and wont be able to go back through it.

Q: You've said before that you believe Ben is free floating through time and space. What did you mean?

When these wormholes are passed through, I don't think they are purely temporal. They are temporal and geographical. When Ben pushed the donkey wheel and moved the island, he moved in time and space. His next waking moment he's in his parka in the middle of the Sahara. And that's not only a great distance but he calculated it was like a year and a half later. But I don't think he has any control of that.

Well for those of you that have not seen this yet, our good friend DarkUFO was able to find out from one of his sources that the actor who played Young Ben will return once again this season.

This is interesting news, because this means we will go back to the days of the Dharma Initiative, which means we should hopefully learn more about Ben's back story and maybe Annie.

I know some out there might not care or be too excited about that part of the storyline, but anything we learn about Ben I would be happy.
